His artistic pursuits began with painting, but in 1967 he chose 16mm film as his primary medium, having won the highest prize at a world-renowned experimental film festival in Knocke-le-Zoute, Belgium, for his film entitled ''Selbstschüsse''. From 1978 to 1999, he was a professor of film at the Künstakademie Münster.
